We were a group of 10 Canadians arriving by cruise ship. I was in touch with Juan months before. He offers a nice alternative to the big cruise excursions. He punctually met us at the ship and toured us around in a comfy van for the whole day. He is pleasant and reliable. Thanks Juan.

    Dear Juan,

It was a great time. Our journeys to the penguins on Chiloe, not forgetting the oysters in the Mermaid restaurant in Ancud and the Osorno Volcano in the snow are with me forever. You were a wondeful guide and understood very well what I hoped to accomplish in such short time. You did it all.

What stands out is your intuition and knowledge and the truly wonderful time we had together. Hopefully I will be back for more penguins and the Jesuit churches.

    Regards and all the best,

    Dear Juan,

Thanks for the mail and the nice pictures. Not so much snow when we were up the volcano Osorno!

We enjoyed our trip very much. Our driver was very knowledgeable and we had a very good day with him. I must say the chocolate beer I had with my lunch was not really to my liking, but for the rest we enjoyed it.

I have no suggestions on what else there is to see, as our time ashore was very limited. Myself I like to see birds, maybe that is something to look into? Maybe go more into the mountains and see the Lammergeier etc?

Maybe we return one day to seen more of the continent and less water? It is a long way form Germany, but one never knows.

Best regards, and thanks again for your help

Juan gave us (group of 14) an amazing tour of Puerto Montt, very knowledgeable and gave us a lot of time to enjoy the beautiful areas. He managed to arrange a very great lunch for us at a resort which was not usually open to the public.

  • Mayo 9, 2014 – Robert Thompson dice:

On our recent cruise, we booked a day tour in advance with Juan. He responded very promptly to all our enquires and, before our cruise, sent us photographs of the area. He was waiting for us when we alighted the tender. We had already arranged what we wanted to see and this included the Osorno Volcano. We enjoyed his excellent tour very much. Juan has a very good command of English and was very knowledgeable about the area. He returned us to the ship in plenty of time. There were problems with tenders the morning of our trip because there were three ships in port that day. I would advise anyone booking this trip to get off the ship as early as possible. When we visited the National Park to see the Falls, it was so crowded it was difficult to move. Although we did see the volcano, which is a spectacular sight, we did not have time to go up it, just in case there was a problem getting back.

Again, thank you and best regards,

In November 2012 I had a few days free from meetings in Santiago. I had never seen penguins in the wild. The nearest seemed to be on Chiloe. I was advised to contact Juan Sunkel. It was the best travel advice I have ever been given. Juan met me in Puerto Montt and over two short days was much more than a guide. He drove me, filled me with the Chile’s history, found restaurants with great food and views and became an essential part of my life. And the penguins? We saw them, an exceptonal experience, reached the base camp of the Osorno Volcano in a snow storm and drove around lakes in the grey drizzle of early spring. Juan shone throughout all of this; what a travelling companion, guide and friend.

Juan, Suzanne and I were very happy with the way in which you looked after us in Puerto Montt.
You speak very good English and we had no difficulty communicating with you. We appreciated your sense of humour and you have a very good knowledge of the local area including cultural matters, flora and fauna.
We felt that you made good suggestions and choices as to where we should go on the various day trips and the trips to the Island and up into the lake area were spectacular.
You knew the best places to take good photos and we appreciated the photos that you took of Sue and me together.
You were always punctual and the car was clean and we appreciated the supply of drinking water and hand-wipes etc.
We have certainly recommended that our friends travel to Chile and down to your area and we would strongly recommend you as their guide.
I hope that you can use this reference and we are sorry that we could not use the official website to provide our reference for you.
We certainly want to return to Chile at some stage and to go further south in Patagonia.
It is our intention to visit Antarctica via Patagonia and also visit Machu Pichu and the Galapagos Islands in the next year or so.
    Best Regards,
    Suzanne and Michael Carr,

We were very pleased with Juan. He is an attentive and caring person. The tour arranged by him was quite extensive and touched on all the highlights including getting us up to the chairlift which one can use to get to the top of the Osorno volcano. He had just purchased a new KIA, an SUV model, which ran smoothly and was very comfortable for us. Ours was a private tour which included a trip to Petrohue River and to Puerto Varas, the City of Roses. We were well looked after, including an introduction to a restaurant with German ancestry but also serving Chilean food. That was our request. He brought us back to the pier, on time and after a very eventful day having introduced us to the delights of Chile. Juan speaks English well and is also fluent in German. He has extensive knowledge of the area and was an excellent guide. We would without hesitation recommend him.

Fantastic trip and tour guided by our now very good friend Juan Sunkel. He was always on time and highly informative and made all of my family feel very relaxed. My wife and I have a 2 year old boy who travelled with us and I have to say Juan was very good ( and patient) with him , his singing and music in the car! We thouroughly enjoyed ourselves as Juan knows the region extensively and took us to the best spots. Highly recommended! We will be back soon Juan! Abrazo!

  • Marzo 7, 2015 – Gijs van den Hurk dice:

Perfectly on time (in the harbour) with a brand-new touring car, very friendly, caring and informative in german and english, Juan Sunkel provied us with an excellent private tour of Puerto Montt, Puerto Varas, Lake Llanquihue, Orsono Vulcano and its beautiful surroundings. Always explaining our questions and stopping at request at any scenic place (lake, lama’s, vulcano, river, plants, flowers, etc.) Juan allowed us magnificent nature videographing always with a silenced car engine. Juan Sunkel should not be missed as a guide when visiting beautifull Puerto Montt in Chile with a videocamera.

Very pleased with tour guide. Really understood what we were hoping for, very comfortable with his driving, his discussion about the area, what he included in the tour. A definitely great day made so by our tour guide. Might have gotten rid of small towns or driven thru instead of walking around town square but a great time!!!!

  • Marzo 27, 2015 – Rick Dunning dice:

Selecting Juan was one of the highlights of our two week trip through southern South America. Juan is very friendly, speaks English well, and is well versed on the area. He was waiting for us as we got to shore and had a new van which was very comfortable. We could not have been happier. The cost of this tour was only a bit more than had we both taken the ships group bus tours which were not as much fun as being with Juan. I happen to be a bird watcher and he was helping us spot birds and would patient as we got out to look. Don’t hesitate to use Juan on your trip to Puerto Montt!

  • Abril 5, 2015 – Anja Doehrer dice:

During our 5 weeks trip to South America we booked lots of private tours and we met many different guides. They all were nice but the day we spent in Puerto Montt with Juan was very special to us. He knew all the nice and secret places and had the perfect timimg to get us there before the crowds from the cruise ships arrived. It was just like spending a day with an old friend. And talking to him in German almost felt like home… Whenever you have the chance to book a tour with Juan, do it!!!

    Juan is the best!
Four of us booked a tour with Juan before embarking on a cruise of South America. Our first stop was Puerto Montt, where Juan was waiting for us as promised when we got off the ship. We drove through Puerto Montt and on into the beautiful countryside to the Lake District and the most spectacular scenery imaginable. Snow covered volcanoes, rushing cataracts, alpine lakes and even a llama farm were on our route. We spent about six hours, including a stop at a picturesque restaurant for a lunch of local salmon and refreshing Chilean wine. Juan’s van was modern, clean and comfortable, but the best part of the trip was Juan, himself. He was friendly, knowledgeable and very accommodating to our every wish and inquiry, showing great patience as we asked him to pronounce the names of places over and over again. It was a wonderful outing and the absolute highlight of our trip. I’d urge anyone to skip the offerings by the cruise company and book a personal tour with Juan. Much more pleasant and economical as well.

Petrohué Falls and a Glimpse at Chile’s Los Lagos Region!!!
Immediately upon disembarking from our ship, we met up with our sweet and genuine guide, Juan Sunkel Cerro. Prior to our arrival, I had carefully arranged for Juan to take us around the Lake District given our limited time in the immediate region. Throughout the day, Juan patiently made sure that we were taken care of and kindly amended our itinerary when we requested to see certain sites.

All 6 of us in the group had a wonderful time! We particularly enjoyed seeing Petrohue Falls as well as the local fauna and flora. Weather in this part of Chile, regardless of the time of year (it was late December for us), can change quickly and drastically. Be sure you pack prepared with a raincoat. We weren’t sure we would get to see the volcano Osorno (there is a 50-50 chance it will be visible), but the clouds parted for a few moments so that we could see its awesomeness. Even if you are not so lucky with the weather, the sights are wonderful and Juan is incredibly pleasant and accommodating!

  • Agosto 4, 2018 – Josette Mathers dice:

Look no further! Juan’s your man!
We visited Puerto Montt and Castro from the Zaandam in December 2017 and used Juan’s services for both ports. In Puerto Montt we managed to get an early tender off the ship and a smiling Juan was waiting for us – it was a good start! We spent two fabulous days with him. From Puerto Montt, we had a wonderful day touring around Lago Llanquihue and Lago Todos Los Santos with the magnificent ever-present Osorno Volcano in the background, seeing the Petrohue rapids, the lava and ash fields at the bottom of Osorno, and a quick stop in the Germanic town of Puerto Varas. The scenery was beautiful and Juan was informative and flexible, stopping when we wanted to take photos and stopping where we were not fighting with the crowds from the ship’s tour buses.

After dropping us off at the ship, Juan drove down to Castro where he was waiting for us early the next morning. We again had a most enjoyable day touring the island of Quinchao and the Rilan Peninsula. We stopped to see the palafitos in Castro, visited some, but not too many!, of the UNESCO listed timber churches, and spent time wandering through the markets at Achao, all while Juan was giving us as much time as we wanted to look around. In Rilan, we had an unexpected stop to sample some cider brewed by a local from his apple orchard! Just one of the touches that made this tour unique. Thanks Juan – we had a ball!
