Adventure in the “Cordillera Real”

Condoriri We acclimatize for a few days in La Paz and take advantage of our time by taking some tours to explore the city. Then we visit Lake Titicaca andhike around “SunIsland”: the mythological origin of our earth. Our 9 day trek will then take us from the Altiplano to what is probably the most beautiful part of the “Cordillera Real” : the “CondorMountain Range”with its numerous glaciers. At the Chiar Khota Lagoon impressively situated at the foot of this massif we set up our camp, which includes a kitchen tent as well as our normal 2 person–tents. From here we have the opportunity to climb the Pico Austria which is over 5000 m high.Crossing two passes we reach the LivinosaValley on the Northern side of the HuaynaPotosiMountain, which is over 6000 m high. We get our most beautiful view of this giant when we climb up the next pass East of the Zongo valley. This is where we enter “LakeValley”. Several lagoons stretch out at the foot of the giant mountains, making the view even more impressive.Baja Brava grass characterizes the surroundings, and the only signs of civilization are a few stone houses belonging to farmers. Our equipment is carried by llamas. We trekkers only carry our own day packs, but we do get the chance to help load up the animals. After arriving at the lake region we leave the lamas behind and continue with mules or porters. Now we leave this world of giant glaciers behind and hike along tracks which date back to pre-Inca times on the Eastern slopes of the Andes. As Humboldt did on his tour to Chimborazo we now hike down through the lush vegetation descending from 4000 meter above sea-level right to 1000 meters as we get into the Amazon area. With views on the glaciers, we will pass dense forests of ferns before finally reaching coffee and banana plantations. After this easy but long trek we enjoy a relaxing day at a pleasant hotel with a tropical atmosphere. We make our way on to La Paz along the legendary Yunga Roadby public transportation.

Day 01) Departure

Day 02)Arrival in La Paz
Transfer to the hotel in the city-center.Whilst in La Paz we use our time to get used to the altitude. We do a short stroll to the witch market and try out the coca tea, which, as the locals will tell us, does a great job in helping us get acclimatized.

Day 03) City tour
We explore the city by foot. La Paz has to be one of the most interesting cities in South America. The lively merchants, farmers and traditionally-dressed Indians in the markets make a start contrast to the surrounding modern buildings. We explore the old city with its main square and the Government buildings. We visit the FranciscanChurch and the city’s Cathedral.

Llama Trek

Day 04) Hike
In order to keep getting more used to the altitude we do a small hike. We walk from “Valle de las Animas” (SoulValley) through a narrow gorge formed by sediment and up to a viewpoint at 4000 m.Herewe have a spectacular view over La Paz and MountIllimani(6450 m). In the afternoon we return to our hotel.

Day 05) Chacaltaya
A half-day excursion takes us to the neighboring Chacaltaya Ski Center. With good weather conditions we get a great view over the whole of the “Cordillera Real” up to the distant Mount Illampu.Glacier after glacier, summit after summit stretch before us and out to the horizon… Here we are 5000 m above sea-level sowe only take a small walk before returning to our hotel. We also start to do some shopping for our trekking trip.

Day 06) Lake Titicaca
In the morning we take the public bus to the pilgrim village of Copacabana on the shores of the Lake Titicaca 3810 m above sea -level . In the afternoon we explore the lovely surroundings and hope to see one of the famous sunsets, best appreciated from the CalvariaHill.

Day 07) SunIsland
We get to the northern part of SunIsland by boat . A hike of about 3 hours takes us to the holy fountain.According to the pre-Inca mythology not only the whole world but the whole universe was created here. With good weather conditions we enjoy a verybeautiful view over the mountain range.

Day 08) Condoriri Trekking
Even during our drive through the Altiplano to the starting point of our trek we can appreciate the exceptional beauty of the Condoriri Massif. Sir Martin Conway, one of the first explorers from the Western Worldand the first man to climb the Illimani, talked about the “clouds” of condors he saw aroundthe mountain, thereby giving the mountain its name. After a 3-hour hike we reach our camp at the Chiar Khota Lagoon. It lies at 4600 m in what is probably the most beautiful scenery in the whole of the Andes. It is also the highest camping spot of our entire tour. Our baggage will be carried by llamas and later by mules . Each participant carries his own day-pack.

Day 09) Pico Austria
Now that we are fully acclimatized to the altitude, we climb the 5300 m high Pico Austria. For this 3 hours ascent participants need to be in good physical shape but there is no requirement for technical experience.Depending on the season, we might use crampons on the upper part.Alternatively we can explore the glacier above the Pico Illusion and the Pequeño Alpamayo . We spend another night at the Chiar Khota Lagoon.

Day 10) Livinosa Lagoon
We hike to the lowest point between Aguja Negra and Pico Mirador with a beautiful view over the 6000 m mountain Huayna Potosi. A second pass must be crossed before we can descend down to the LivinosaValley. After 7 hours we reach our camp at the lake.

Day 11) LakeRegion
We go further down – slowly there is morevegetation – and after about 3 hours we reach the Chacapampa Settlement at 3580 m above sea-level. Here we will stock up on provisions and begin the second part of the trek – the path through the Lake Region. This path connects the Condoriri region with the Choro Trek which leads to the Yungas. This is a rarely hiked path and passes small lakes and little mountain villages. We go up to the WarawaraniLakeat 4550 m and go back down again to the village of Palca at 3960 m.The route passes the giant south wall of MountTiquimani.

Day 12) Sanja Pampa
Another day tour takes us to the Sanja Pampa Settlement at 3850 m, a very attractive spot for photographs.Life here probably has not changed much in the last 100 years.

Day 13) Choro Trek
On Day 13 we arrive at the last part of this route, the Choro Trek. This is quite well-known among hikers and leads down to the Yungas andinto the Amazon Area. We climb a pass 4000 m high and hike to the village Achura at 3600 m. Depending on how we feel, we continue as far as Challapampa at 3000m.

Day 14)Rainforest and Morpho butterflies.
We leave the region of the glaciers, mountain giants and lakes and start walking down towards the Amazon, partly on pre-Inca paths. The landscape changes drastically. After about 2 hours of walking through subtropical vegetation we reach the Choro bridge above Challapampa.Unfortunately it often gets destroyed by strong rain falls and has to be replaced by a single rope. After another 5 hours we reach Sandillani, which is our next camp at 2000 m above sea-level. The Japanese immigrant Tamiji Hanamura has settled here and provides food for the tired hikers. His guest booked is filled with names from the whole world.

Day 15) Trekkers’ Paradise
We hike down through great dense forests to Chairo at 1260 m. This is the end of our trek. We organize a truck or minibus, which takes us to the other side of the valley up to Coroico. Here, bananaand coca plantations, oranges and mandarins, nice restaurants and a pleasant hotel are waiting for us.

Day 16/17 Coroico
We spend 2 days in Coroico, relaxing at the pool or exploring the surroundings by ourselves. These days are also programmed as extra days in order to have a buffer in case we want to do more trekking.

Day 18)La Paz
We take a public bus to La Paz.In the afternoon there is time to buy souvenirs.
