      Round-trips

Bolivian & Chile
Altiplano, Llama Trekking & Atacama Desert

In Bolivia people still lead the very traditional way of life associated with the Aymara and Inca culture.  It is as if time had stood still a long time ago.  A mixture of colorful markets, women with big, thick skirts and hats, farmers working in their Quinoa fields or taking care of their alpaca herds – unforgettable impressions of another world. Our first experience of this fascinating country starts at 3600m above sea-level in La Paz, which will serve as the home-base for our trip.  A short flight along the Andes takes us to the “white town” of Sucre, one of the most beautiful locations in South America.   Memories from this place, including the sight of the coca-leaf chewing miners from Cerro Rico, will stay with us for a long time.   We travel by public transport to the huge salt-lake near Uyuni which extends for about 12000 km2.  The whiteness of the ground is quite unique, particularly when set off by the colors of the giant cactus plants.  We go by colorful flamengo lakes to get to the “Sol de Manana” geothermal field.  At this point we cross the border into Chile and visit the driest desert in the world – the Atacama Desert. A one-day trip will take us to the Lauca National Park with its ice-covered volcanoes, some of which are over 6000m.  From here we return to La Paz and do a final 3-day trekking trip in the Cordillera Real mountain range.   Our luggage will be transported by llamas during the trek.

Day 01) Departure

Day 02)
Arrival in La Paz and transfer to hotel. This town is so colorful that time seems to fly by. First of all we acclimatize by drinking coca tea and relaxing a little.

Day 03)
We visit the witch-market, the church San Francisco and the Presidential Palace at the Plaza Murillo. Hotel.

Laguna Verde

Day 04)
We travel by plane to the “white town” of Sucre with its 16th century colonial character.  Because of its favorable location and the mild climate Sucre is not just the capital, but has also become Bolivia’s most cultural city.

Day 05)
A 2 hour drive takes us to a marvelous mountain range. Here we go hiking to a spot where there are interesting rock paintings. Hotel in Sucre.

Day 06)
A ride by public bus takes us to Potosi. This was once the biggest city in America. Today it is protected by the UNESCO, because of its beauty. A stroll through Potasi with its churches, elegant houses, elaborate balconies and quaint little lanes is quite unforgettable.  Hotel.

Day 07)
Our excursion on day 7 is back into the past.  Equipped with a helmet and a lamp we boldly make for the “Cerro Rico”, the ‘rich mountain’. Here miners still exploit the ore with their hands, as they have done for centuries. A bus ride through the attractive landscape takes us to Uyuni.
Hotel

Day 08-10)
On day 8 we start our adventurous 3-days jeep safari through a dazzling white-salt desert. Our safari takes us from Uyuni, past a volcano island, giant cactus, vicunas, “suris”, sandy deserts, amazing rock formations, impressive geysers, such as the “Sol de Mañana”,  and on to the blue-green lakes and the deep red Laguna Colorado with its flamingo colonies. We also take the opportunity to have a cup of coca tea in a hotel built only from salt. Although the accommodation is very simple, the beauty of the landscape is more than worth it. On the third day we drive past 5000m high volcanoes (some of them are still active) across the border to the Chilean town San Pedro in the Atacama desert.

San Pedro

Day 11)
The pretty oasis town San Pedro with its pepper trees, white adobe houses and narrow lanes has a very special atmosphere. We can hike to 12 Century ruins of the “Pukara de Quitor” or visit  the Museum created by the Jesuit Missionary, Le Paige and famous for its very well preserved mummies.   There is an option to visit the “El Tatio” geysers very early in the morning.  But it is not just sunrise that provides excellent photo opportunities; sunset in “Valle de la Luna” (Moon Valley”) is also beautiful to capture on film.  An overnight comfortable bus trip takes us to Arica.

Altiplano

Day 12)
We arrive in Arica in the early morning. We spend the day relaxing in the most northern town in Chile, with its tropical character and beautiful beaches.  Hotel.

Day 13)
On day 13 we do a very interesting three-hour drive from Arica, known as the “town of the spring” on the Pacific coast to the town of Putre at 3200 m above sea-level. Hotel.

Day 14)
Trip to Lauca National Park. Here we discover delightful Andes flora and fauna, against the setting of snow-covered volcanoes, many over 5000m.  We also get a view over the highest Bolivian volcano, Samaja.

Day 15)
On day 15 we take a comfortable public bus from Putre to La Paz in Bolivia.
Hotel.

Day 16)
We have time to get to know the interesting city of La Paz by ourselves and also to prepare for our trekking trip. Hotel.

Guanaco

Day 17-19)
In the morning we start a 3-day “llama trek”. We discover the holy mountains known as Azmara, and one of the most beautiful mountain ranges on earth, the Cordillera Real. We hike slowly through a world of huge glaciers, while lamas carry our luggage. Sometimes we can even see condors.  Although this trip does not require technical experience, participants should be in good physical shape since the trekking is at 5000m above sea-level.   Camping
We spend the last night in our hotel in La Paz. In the late afternoon we have time to do some shopping.
