How to get there:
From Concepción the way leads in direction of Cabrero until crossing the Ruta 5 which leads to Los Angeles. Than you need to drive eastern until reaching Santa Barbara after almost 45 km. After 49 km more you will finally arrive in Villa Ralco, the capital of the municipality Alto Biobio. The road is in a good condition and passable for all kinds of vehicles.
From here the road leads to Valle del Río Queuco. Until the starting point of the trail, the community centre of Trapa Trapa, the distance is 42 km.
During the way you will cross 3 municipalities: Pitril, Cauñicu and Malla Malla. The road is in a good condition and passable for all kinds of vehicles.

Description:
The distance of the way is 50.9 km which are subdivided into 4 paths.

1: Trapa Trapa – Camping Pilkinko (6 km)

With some breaks the way takes 3 hours on a horseback. It starts at the house of Belisarion and Félix Tranamil which is situated next to the passable street. Then it ascends along the creek Nirehueco for almost 300 m until reaching the entrance. The way is in good condition and leads finally to the mirador La Montura (km 3) from where you get a beautiful view to the valley Trapa Trapa and the river bed of the Cochico.
Then you will cross the river bed of the creek Nirehueco as well as some Hualles forests and hike along the slopes of the mountains until reaching the camping Pilkinko (km 7).

2. Camping Pilkinko – summer meadow Lengas de Trapa (14.7 km)
The way crosses the creek Nirehueco and leads us northern-western along summer meadows and Oak forests. It gets a bit higher until the path reaches the origin of the creek Nirehueco (1840 m). Then it leads to the marshland Pañuelo. Here are no forests but a typical landscape for the steppe Alto Andina.
From here the path descends to the lake Vega where we will find a lonely araucaria. The road is in really good condition while leading through the valley of the creek Trapa Trapa and over big green meadows. The descends are slight. Finally we reach Lengas de Trapa (14.7 km) where it’s possible to overnight and relax.

3. Lengas de Trapa – Piedra del Indio

Now the way leads Northern and crosses the pampas Las Lengas (2.3 km) and Oak forests at slopes. Then the landscape changes, now it’s the steppe Alto Andina again, where grasses grew like a proof of vegetation. After that we cross the pampas Campamento and a creek of the same name.

We continue the hike until we reach Piedra Del Indio, a place with a great cultural importance for the Pehuenche as well as for visitors. Many years ago a couple died here because of violent storm. Since then it’s a place which is threaten with many respect.

The jouney goes on. It takes approximately 2 hours to get to the Piedra Del Indio from here.

4. Lengas de Trapa – Terman de Nitrao (25 km)
The way leads us southwestern to the river bed of the long marshland. Then we take the turning to the West where the trail ascends until to the slopes which enclose the valley. We will get some amazing views to the long marshland and the border of Argentina until reaching the highest point of the whole trail: the pass Curamallin (km 9) with a height of 2060 m. From here you will have beautiful views to the volcano Callaqui and over Alto Bíobío.
The pass descends now until we reach the river bed of the creek Infiernillo from where it’s possible to have great views to the mountain range Sierra Veluda, the highest mountains in this region. We continue the real trail and arrive at the lagoon Curamallin (11.5 km) before crossing summer meadows of the community. The lagoon is surrounded with Oak forests and there are varies bird species. Without a doubt this is a really nice place to relax at the creeks.
We leave the lagoon and continur the trail to a height of 1100 m. There the way passes slopes and the riverbed of the Infiernillo. Finally we reach the place where the Infiernillo meets the Queuco. From here the way leads eastern to the hot spring Nitrao (25 km) where the trail ends. It’s possible to get into the hot springs to relax a bit after the journey.
